iCare empowers local ophthalmologists

For sustainable care, training is key.

Besides providing direct eyecare to the needy, iCare also seeks to to train local ophthalmologists in the communities that it visits. After all, it is these individuals who will be able to provide sustainable and long-term care after iCare volunteers leave. Sharing our resources, whether it be in public health or surgical training, is one of the ways iCare empowers grassroots eyecare. For example, in 2009, iCare doctors were able to train local Cambodian ophthalmologists. An oculoplastics teaching course demonstrated advanced techniques in orbital, lacrimal, and eyelid surgery.

The training continues in Swaziland.

In 2010, in Swaziland, by the invitation of the government of Swaziland, and the ministry of health, in a country with only two ophthalmologists, iCare was able to provide training in basic oculoplastic surgery. In a country with only 2 ophthalmologists, it is imperative that they be trained in as large a breadth of surgery as possible.

One of the clinics in Kenya that iCare supports.

iCare also helps support eye clinics, such as the one pictured to the right in Kenya. The establishment and continual support of such eye clinics through training and monetary donations is a key component of iCare’s effort to improve the vision health of people around the world. Donating to iCare helps us support these crucial eye clinics and provide sustainable ophthalmic care around the world. We invite you to invest and partner with us in our endeavors around the world.
